Position Summary

The University of Denver is seeking an experienced, driven, and passionate professional to join our Advancement team as the Director of Foundation Relations. This is a unique opportunity for a skilled professional to join a dynamic, growing and purposeful enterprise united around a compelling vision charted by Chancellor Rebecca Chopp. The incumbent will be part of the university-wide advancement team. In this capacity s/he will approach this role in innovative ways by partnering directly with a community of talented professionals advancing the mission of the University of Denver and representing the bold ideas of our campus community to inspire philanthropy and engagement.



Reporting directly to the Executive Director, Foundation Relations within Advancement, the Director of Foundation Relations will partner with administrative, academic, and advancement team to secure funding from private grant making organizations in support of the University's mission and priorities. The Director serves as a subject matter expert in the area of institutional giving (private foundations) and will actively pursue funding opportunities for programs within the University. The Director will manage a large portfolio of foundation prospects. Additionally, the Director will establish and maintain relationships with program officers and foundation representatives to assist in advocacy of University programs for funding opportunities.

Essential Functions

Fundraising and Stewardship

  • Knowledge of cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies and techniques, particularly in the area of private foundation/institutional fundraising.

  • Proactively identify potential new sources of institutional support (select local, regional, national private foundations), while focusing on existing foundation donors by developing and maturing his/her own portfolio of foundations capable of making major and principal gifts to DU.

  • Utilizing a thorough understanding of the University's priorities, build productive relationships with faculty and other staff at DU to successfully identify promising programs, research, and priorities being performed at the university and develop a compelling case for support.

  • Prepare and implement annual plans with quantitative and qualitative goals for the foundation relations program, including but not limited to: number of prospects under active management, number of solicitations, and total amount to be raised, and deadlines for proposal submission.

  • On an ongoing basis and as requested, suggest/request appropriate research for foundation prospects, as well as develop briefs and strategies for engagement.

  • Work with Stewardship Department to prepare acknowledgments for all gifts received through Advancement Office. Work with Marketing and Communications regarding the development of press releases and media announcements on grant awards and programs.

  • As a representative of the university, travel to meet prospects for the purpose of effective, coordinated and efficient cultivation, solicitation and stewardship; when needed, coordinate travel with Executive Director, Foundation Relations, and other campus leadership as appropriate.




Grant Proposal Management

  • As appropriate, inform units of the amount and purpose of the grant awards and ensure proper utilization of the funds and compliance with grant requirements in coordination with the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP).

  • Serve as a resource for faculty grant development, assisting with pre-proposal design, editing, budget preparation, providing proposal collaterals for university-wide and unit based initiatives and cross-multidisciplinary projects as appropriate.

  • Monitor the status of solicitations and all corresponding reporting requirements from faculty of multiple divisions across campus for projects that match campaign priorities as well as manage deadlines effectively.




Partnerships & University Citizenship

  • Provide expertise on institutional funding and its impacting on higher education. Stay current on literature and trends in institutional giving, and share this information within the Advancement team.

  • Work across campus to execute foundation fundraising strategies. The Advancement team is highly collaborative in its work and builds extensive value-added relationships with its campus partners.

  • Provide support in communicating new grant opportunities, as well as the University's grants submission process and policies on a regular basis through venues such as faculty orientations and workshops, and maintain this information on the DU's advancement website.

  • Establish meaningful, collegial working relationships with development colleagues by communicating effectively and collaborating with individual major gift officers to identify alumni, parents and friends who could be helpful with institutional fundraising.

  • Model "One DU" leadership.




Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience soliciting private foundation and/or institutional support.

  • Proven exemplary ability to work with a high level of independence, maintain confidentiality, prioritize assignments, and manage time effectively.

  • Strong project management experience, with the ability to successfully engage in multiple initiatives simultaneously.

  • Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

  • Demonstrated technical knowledge of proposal development – superb writing and editorial skills.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills to foster and maintain effective relationships with faculty, advancement staff, and foundation program officers.

  • Ability to interact effectively with diverse groups, work in a collaborative environment with competing interests and priorities within the university and external community.

  • Self-motivated and attentive to details and deadlines, and exhibit creativity and entrepreneurial energy.

  • Ability to travel locally and out of state to attend donor and potential donor meetings.



Required Qualifications




  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

  • 3 years of paid fundraising experience.

  • Demonstrated successful private foundation fundraising.






Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.

  • 5 years of paid fundraising experience.

  • Experience in higher education or similarly complex non-profit setting.

  • Familiarity with Denver's philanthropic community.




Work Schedule

  • Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

  • Evenings and weekends as required.
