Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences

Department Summary:
Bridgewater State University, the 10th largest college or university, public or private, in Massachusetts, seeks an innovative, collaborative, and visionary academic leader as the next Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The universitys 272 acre main campus is home to 40 academic, administrative and residential buildings. The university also has three instructional locations away from the main campus: BSU Cape Cod, BSU Attleboro and the BSU Flight Training Center located at New Bedford (MA) Airport. Of the approximately 11,000 students served by the University, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences currently serves approximately 5,100 undergraduate declared majors and 400 graduate students across 16 academic departments.

The past two decades has seen a transformation of the campus and strong growth in the student population. Through this period, Bridgewater State University has remained steadfast in its commitment to offering small class sizes and extraordinary teaching and mentoring by a world-class faculty. Position Summary:
The Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, consisting of the departments of Anthropology, Art and Art History, Communication Studies, Criminal Justice, Dance, Economics, English, Global Languages and Literatures, History, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Theater and the School of Social Work. The Dean articulates the goals of the College, both within the university and to the outside community. The Dean also oversees several centers and interdisciplinary minors within the College.

Given the significance of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences within the university, the Dean will be a strong supporter and advocate for the liberal arts and will nurture and advance external partnerships and collaborations that serve students and the college. The Dean will be innovative and creative, possessing the skills needed to work closely with faculty and members of the university community to develop new programs that respond to evolving needs.

Position Type: Professional Non-Unit

Essential Duties:
Provide leadership for and oversee the development, coordination, organization, scheduling and supervision of instructional programs in the College and promote interdisciplinary collaboration with programs in the other academic Colleges of the University.

Allocate resources to departments in the College, including faculty, support staff, budgets and space.

Oversee and coordinate the hiring of faculty members in the departments of the College, negotiating salary and start-up requests with faculty candidates, and administering the Colleges affirmative action activities in a manner consistent with the policies of the University.

Make recommendations to the Provost in the evaluation of faculty members in the departments of the College.

Work with academic departments in the development of budgets according to the time line of the University, review proposed budgets, and make recommendations to the Provost.

Coordinate planning at the strategic and operational levels in a manner that maintains and improves the overall effectiveness of the College.

Initiate and oversee undergraduate and graduate program reviews, and ensure that individual programs within the College achieve and maintain appropriate accreditation/certification.

Coordinate with the Dean of the College of Graduate Studies to assure that the MPA, MSW, MAT, MS and MA degree programs are appropriately administered and supported.

Coordinate with the Dean of the College of Graduate Studies and the Dean of the College of Continuing Studies to ensure that the College is appropriately involved in credit and non-credit continuing education opportunities.

Work collaboratively with faculty, department chairs, graduate program and continuing education coordinators, and other administrators to advance the mission of the University.

Work collaboratively with the Vice President for Institutional Advancement and the Director of Grants and Sponsored Projects to secure funding from external sources.

Work collaboratively with the Vice President for Student Success and Diversity to assure that the College maintains and advances a commitment to student success, including the elimination of achievement gaps.

Communicate information to students directly and through the department chairs and College faculty.

Assure that reports, course schedules, and other written materials are submitted in a timely manner.

Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
An earned doctorate from an accredited institution in one of the disciplines of the College.

Demonstrated record of distinguished teaching, research/scholarship, and service consistent with a tenured faculty appointment at the rank of Professor in one of the Colleges academic departments.

Significant contributions to appropriate professional organizations.

Demonstrated accomplishments at increasing levels of administrative responsibility.

At least five (5) years of experience at the level of Department Chair or higher.

Demonstrated effectiveness in program development, review and revision.

Demonstrated commitment to student success, affirmative action, and institutional diversity.

Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing with diverse constituencies.

An ability to work effectively and collegially with faculty, students, other administrators, parents, K-12 personnel, and other external constituencies.

Knowledge of higher education practices and trends, including but not limited to curriculum and instruction.

Personal qualities to include integrity, good judgment, creativity, and collegiality.
