Compensation and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $135,000 - $137,000 per year, commensurate with the background and experience of the individual selected.

This is a full-time, exempt, CSU Management Personnel Plan (MPP) position.

The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 14 paid holidays a year. Job Summary

Reporting to the Vice President of University Advancement, the Associate Vice President (AVP) for University Communications coordinates strategic communications to build trust, understanding and support for the University. This role oversees a wide range of complex communication strategies requiring outstanding experience in issues management, executive communications, media management, public relations, crisis communications, and social media. Additionally, the incumbent must possess exceptional organizational skills, originality, mature judgment and a thorough knowledge of the academic and administrative structure of the campus.

The Associate Vice President is a member of the University Cabinet and the University Advancement Executive Team. The Associate Vice President is responsible for internal and external institutional communications. This position manages and participates in news and information gathering and dissemination through print, electronic, audio/visual, social media and web-based communication.

Key Qualifications
  • Ability to advise the president and senior cabinet of the university on communications strategies to positively advance the university's mission and vision.
  • Excellent journalistic, verbal and written communication skills with ability to develop and implement a multi-faceted communications plan involving web, social, video, print, and spoken word.
  • Demonstrated ability to build, develop and effectively lead a productive team.
  • Understanding and experience in social media as part of a communications strategy.
  • Advanced knowledge of the academic and administrative structure of universities, as well as trends and emerging issues in the realm of higher education at a state and national level strongly preferred.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, in communications, journalism, public relations or related field.
  • Five years of direct experience in communications, journalism, public relations or related field.
  • Direct-line experience managing and leading teams to advance a vision.
  • Experience advising senior leadership on internal and external communications strategies.
  • Knowledge of the operations of news organizations and understanding of current technology and techniques to inspire engagement and enhance communication.
  • Experience and competence in working with culturally diverse internal and external audiences.
