Job Description

The Assistant Director, Center for Isotope Geochemistry, oversees the daily operation and general oversight of two critical instruments located within the Center for Isotope Geochemistry. These include a brand new LA-ICPMS system and an Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer (IRMS). These instruments comprise the geochemical infrastructure of CIESR: the Center for Integrated Environmental Systems Research.
The Assistant Director is responsible for laboratory safety, user training and support, carrying out calibrations, data reductions, assessment of data quality, and instrument maintenance, including responsibility for diagnosing and trouble-shooting problems. They will also participate in the production, interpretation, and dissemination of geochemical data. In addition, the Assistant Director may be asked to help support other research equipment in the Center for Isotope Geochemistry. The primary purpose of this position is to ensure that the geochemical infrastructure of CIESR located within the Center for Isotope Geochemistry operates efficiently while maintaining the highest standards to optimize the research productivity and educational opportunities for BC faculty and staff, students, their collaborators, and other external users.
The Assistant Director will directly supervise and assist undergraduate and graduate students each year from Boston College and outside institutions as they conduct research in the Center for Isotope Geochemistry.
The Assistant Director should have at least four years of experience in isotope geochemistry ideally including LA-ICPMS and/or IRMS. A doctoral degree in Earth Science, Geochemistry, Chemistry or a related field is preferred; a masters is the minimum requirement. One or more years of experience in managing a geochemical laboratory is highly desirable.
Occasional out of hours availability required in case issues emerge with instruments or users.
Must be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds.

This is currently a grant funded position for 2 years with the possibility for continued funding beyond that period.

Full-Time Equivalent Hiring Range: $74,050 to $92,550; salary commensurate with relevant experience.

Requirements

The Assistant Director must have a working knowledge of geochemistry and geochemical laboratory procedures, and must be knowledgeable of or capable of learning the operation of (LA-)ICPMS and EA-IRMS with the support of faculty/staff members and service engineers.
Significant background in isotopic geochemical research, reporting and dissemination of data, and interpretation of data (via student research or job experience) is required. Optimally this will include several years' experience in managing a research laboratory with analytical mass spectrometry, ideally with (LA-)ICPMS and IRMS including troubleshooting, routine maintenance, software and hardware applications, as well as sample preparation for these instruments.

A doctoral degree in Earth Science, Geochemistry, Chemistry or a related field is preferred. A minimum of a master's degree in one of the same fields is required.
