Assistant Professor, American Politics

The Department of Political Science and International Relations at the University of San Diego invites applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level in American politics with expertise on State and Local politics. Applicants should have completed a PhD in Political Science before September 2018.

The successful candidate will be expected to offer a variety of lower and upper division courses that meet the needs of the Department of Political Science and International Relations. The department has strengths in American national institutions, campaign and party politics, race and politics, environmental politics, international relations, comparative politics, political theory, and research methods. The successful candidate should be prepared to teach introductory and upper division courses in state and local politics, qualitative or quantitative research methods, and other courses in American politics that fit with his or her substantive interests. There will be opportunities for the successful candidate to lead the department's internship program in collaboration with other campus units, community organizations, and The Washington Center.

Candidates must be fully committed to liberal arts education and to excellence in teaching and student advising. Candidates must also demonstrate a significant scholarly agenda, and will be expected to engage actively in service at the departmental, college, and/or university levels after the first year. The normal teaching load is three courses every semester.

Applicants must submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, official graduate transcripts, a description of the research agenda, three letters of recommendation that speak to teaching and scholarly abilities, and a writing sample. Additionally, candidates must provide evidence of excellence in teaching, including a statement of teaching philosophy and a summary of teaching evaluations. The cover letter should make sure to describe the courses the candidate would prefer to teach.
