Job Description

Provides technical research & academic support services to the research & science community at Boston College by providing analysis, consultation, and implementation of technology in support of academic programs, faculty, and research support. Helps researchers with analysis, modeling and computing as well as support for grant proposals, publications, and dissertation research. Provide support for the preparation of research papers. Uses domain expertise and subject matter expertise to support research projects.
Essential Functions:
Technical research consulting/analysis: Work with multiple faculty and principal investigators to consult on technology needs, and to coordinate software, hardware, and research computing resources that support the research and academic programs of the sciences. For example:
-Data acquisition support and Data Management
-Advanced software support: E.g. MATLAB, SolidWorks, Python
-Maker space technology and augmented and virtual reality
Liaison to Research Services group to coordinate: High performance computing, Research data storage, Research group & grant support.
Documentation/tutorials/workshops: Develop appropriate documentation for research & academic consultation and related software and upgrades. Develop and deliver tutorials and workshops on using engineering and scientific software and other topics. Represent ITS to other University areas to effectively communicate the availability of research support resources to the research community.
Emerging technology: Monitor trends in methods and software to ensure that consulting services are aligned with researchers' needs and current tools and methodologies.

Requirements

Title and salary commensurate with relevant experience based on the following titles and hiring ranges:

Senior Technical Research Consultant (salary up to 110K/yr): Ph.D. in related area preferred. Master's degree with equivalent experience will be considered. Minimum of three to five years of experience in an academic research environment providing research support consultation services.

Technical Research Consultant (salary up to 95K/yr): Ph.D. in related area preferred. Master's degree with equivalent experience will be considered. Minimum of two years of experience in an academic research environment providing research support consultation services.

The Technical Research Consultant is expected to have specialized technical knowledge and expertise depending upon their research domain. Strong computational mathematics and visualization skills, including the use of MATLAB and related computing tools. Expertise in programming languages such as Python, and experience with computer-aided design and computer-aided engineering software such as Solidworks. Experience in data management and data acquisition support, as well as experience with maker space technology, augmented and virtual reality. Must be able to provide assistance during peak research/grant cycles.
