Job Description

The Senior Writer, Principal Giving reports to the Associate Vice President, Principal Giving and will support the wide-ranging communications and stewardship efforts of an expanding and ambitious principal giving fundraising program through writing, editing, and production-related assignments for traditional and new media. Serve as project manager, editor, and writer for a variety of proposals, stewardship and donor recognition materials, and coordinate general institutional communications needs that largely impact principal gift donors. She/he will work collaboratively across University Advancement to create and provide meaningful and highly personalized stewardship and recognition via communications and experiences that inform and inspire principal giving donors to advance their relationship with Boston College.

Primary responsibilities:

• Lead proposal writer responsible for drafting compelling, customized concept papers, proposals, pitch decks and related material to support major philanthropic requests for BC priorities.

• Collaborate with central Stewardship & Donor Engagement team on the planning, writing and production of stewardship reports and special occasion recognition materials for principal gift donors

• Partner with Stewardship and Donor Engagement to plan and produce meaningful and creative recognition gifts (commemorative books, testimonials, gifts, etc.) for principal giving donors in collaboration with UA partners and external vendors

• Work in conjunction with school and athletics development officers, development initiatives, and marketing/communications to repackage content in other written and digital materials and/or develop a variety of custom documents and other projects aimed at educating and informing principal giving donors about transformational giving opportunities at BC.

• Work closely with University Advancement Stewardship and Donor Relations, Marketing/Communications, and School Development teams to research and develop compelling and creative narratives and impact stories to clearly convey the importance and impact of principal giving and transformational philanthropy


This position requires a Bachelor's Degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Marketing or a related field preferred; Master's degree preferred, and five to seven years related work experience in communications, marketing, fundraising stewardship or donor relations for a nonprofit or higher education institution.

In addition, this position requires:
• Grant writing or proposal writing experience strongly preferred
• Exceptional writing skills and ability to translate often complex information with an understanding of writing for print, web, and e-mail
• Solid computer skills with experience using word processing and spreadsheet software; InDesign or document design software experience helpful
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
• Strong project management and organizational skills
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Solid analytical, decision making and problem-solving skills
• Must be a team player who is highly motivated and dedicated to the goals of advancing higher education and have an appreciation for Jesuit Catholic education and the goals and values of Boston College.
