Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching undergraduate introductory geology and soil science courses, a new introductory soil and water analysis course, and an upper-division elective course that complements the existing geology curriculum.

A typical faculty workload responsibility includes twelve (12) contact hours per semester of instruction.
The successful candidate will advise undergraduate majors.
The successful candidate will teach other courses within the Geoscience curriculum based on program needs.
The successful candidate may be requested to develop and deliver face-to-face, hybrid, and on-line instruction at the Mankato campus, online, and/or at the university's additional locations, as needed.
The successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues in curriculum design, instruction and evaluation, and will regularly complete assessments of student learning.
The successful candidate will develop an undergraduate research program and pursue external funding opportunities.
The successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues to create and implement innovative strategies to recruit, retain, and graduate Geology majors and maintain professional relationships with program alumni.
All faculty members are expected to engage in scholarly or creative activity or research, in continuing preparation and study, in contributing to student growth and development, and in providing service to the university and community (see Article 22 and Appendix G of the IFO Master Agreement)

Required Qualifications

Doctorate in Geoscience or a closely related field, with graduate coursework in Geology. (All requirements for the doctorate must be completed by August 1, 2019, and the doctorate must be conferred on an official transcript and received in Human Resources by January 8, 2020.)
A successful research record focused on physical and/or chemical aspects of soils as evidenced by extramural funding, publication in peer-reviewed journals, and/or postdoctoral experience.
Demonstrated experience teaching geology.
Demonstrated effective written, oral communication and/or presentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment.
College-level geology teaching experience.
Experience in one or more of the following: soil geochemistry, soil physics, soil health and conservation, agro-geology.
Ability to contribute to growth and development of an undergraduate geology program.
Demonstrated ability to teach a broad range of geology courses.
Demonstrated ability to initiate and sustain an applied research program including undergraduates, focused on the agricultural aspects of soil chemistry, mineralogy, and /or physics.
Evidence of recent scholarly activity, including publications and professional presentations.
Ability to utilize, develop, and maintain laboratory instruments and facilities in support of geology instructional and research needs.

Additional Information

The Geology program at Minnesota State University, Mankato (MSUM) is a new, growing program staffed by three permanent faculty and currently hosting ~20 majors pursuing the BS Geology degree and the Environmental Geology certificate. It also supports the Earth Science Teaching program. Housed within the Chemistry and Geology Department located in Ford Hall (opened in 2008), key facilities include an instrumentation lab housing X-ray diffraction and fluorescence spectrometers and a liquid TOC/N analyzer, two research labs equipped for rock and water sample analysis, a full complement of rock and sediment sample processing equipment, a dedicated computer lab, and two teaching laboratories. A scanning electron microscope is available in a shared facility housed in the neighboring Biological Sciences Department. A campus-wide agriculture initiative has been supported through recent hires of a soil ecologist (Biology), a soil geomorphologist (Geography), and the establishment of the Institute for Regenerative Resources and Agrisciences. Located 85 miles southwest of the Twin Cities metro area, MSUM is well positioned to serve the large agricultural and environmental services industries in the region.
