Director of the Undergraduate Advising Center At San Francisco State University



Position Summary

The Director of the Undergraduate Advising Center manages and strategically leads the Undergraduate Advising Center (UAC) at San Francisco State University. The UAC provides comprehensive academic counseling to help a diverse population of first-year freshmen and undeclared students achieve their academic, personal, and career goals.



The Undergraduate Advising Center is part of the Division of Undergraduate Education and Academic Planning (DUEAP). DUEAP is comprised of several units that collaborate to serve students and enhance learning. The Director of the Undergraduate Advising Center reports to the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education.



Areas of Responsibility

  • Deliver a student-centered advising model that is consistent with the philosophy and policies of the Undergraduate Advising Center, the Division of Undergraduate Education and Academic Planning, and San Francisco State University.

  • Collaboratively manage a dedicated team of up to 19 staff, including professional academic counselors and administrative staff. Academic counselors provide a full range of services (one-on-one appointments, drop-in advising, workshops, and advising events) to support a caseload of first-year freshmen and undeclared students.

  • Manage all operational aspects of the UAC including budgeting, staffing, supervision, training, and event/project coordination.

  • Working with the Office of New Student and Family Programs, deliver academic advising services to incoming freshmen at summer and winter orientations.

  • Strengthen the UAC's team by identifying, hiring, and training new talent.

  • Participate in initiatives focused on student success, facilitating graduation, and improving academic advising, specifically for first-year freshmen and undeclared students.




Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's or terminal degree in counseling, higher education, student affairs, or a closely related discipline.

  • Five years progressively responsible experience in coordination, administration, and leading academic support or academic advising services.

  • Experience in hiring, supervising, effectively working with, and retaining a diverse staff.

  • Experience with and sensitivity to developing and delivering advising and student support services that meet the needs of a highly diverse student population.

  • Experience working with faculty, staff, and administrators to develop and deliver effective advising and student support programs/services.

  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively within a complex campus advising system where there are numerous constituents and stakeholders requiring accurate and timely communication of advising-related information.

  • Knowledge of student development and counseling theory and its application to academic counseling and student support services.

  • Ability to interpret complex academic policies and apply them to individual student cases in an equitable and compassionate manner.
