About the Position

Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Student Engagement, the Director will lead best practices and initiatives of the Slutzker Center for all undergraduate and graduate international students. With 11 fulltime staff and one graduate student reporting to the Director, the incumbent will additionally be responsible for an overall budget of approximately $900K including salaries and an operating budget of $70K.

Specific duties include but are not limited to these:

  • Provide leadership with regard to immigration policies and compliance standards and protocols for non-immigrant visas, including visa support and programming to support international students regarding work options in the U.S. following graduation;

  • Develop and oversee ongoing programs for international students and scholars to facilitate and support cultural adjustment, academic progress, and ongoing well-being at Syracuse University, working closely and collaboratively with ESE and other offices within the university;

  • Oversee University compliance with Department of Homeland Security and Department of State by developing and updating policies, eligibility requirements and application processes for practical training employment and other off-campus employment benefits as well as other benefits (reinstatement, change of status, academic training) for F and J students and exchange visitor scholars and their dependents;

  • Collaborate with ESE Communication Director and Marketing and Communications department on all communication related to international students and exchange visitor scholars;

  • Oversee the management of crises involving international students and their families;

  • Serve as the Syracuse University Principal Designated School Official (PDSO) and Responsible Officer (RO) for the Student and Exchange Visitor Program;

  • Ensure compliance with federal regulations and policies, submit reports to federal agencies, and maintain SEVIS records;

  • Oversee and perform the review process for academic progress and enrollment for international students each semester in order to ensure compliance with current and new immigration regulations;

  • Coordinate communication/intervention with the Department of Homeland Security and Department of State on behalf of international students and exchange visitor scholars should problems arise;

  • Oversee new and transfer international student pre-arrival processes, communication, resources and information orientations to ensure compliance with Department of Homeland Security and Department of State regulations;

  • Develop and implement effective international student retention strategies and programs;

  • Provide data to academic department heads, Admissions, and other offices with international student enrollment each semester.


The Successful Candidate

The successful candidate will be an innovative, resourceful, high-energy professional who is an exceptional communicator, an effective agent of organizational change, and a team builder and collaborator. The position requires a high amount of visibility on campus, at campus events, and with international student-leaders. The Director must be a student-centered professional who demonstrates: a high level of knowledge about the issues that confront a large private residential college; a commitment to contribute to the University's ongoing effort to promote a diverse and open campus community; competence with the use of research and assessment tools to monitor progress in meeting goals; the ability to develop and maintain productive community and campus partnerships; the proven ability to collaborate, both effectively and with enthusiasm; and strong strategic planning skills.

The incumbent will also be: a person who is pro-active in responding to student concerns; an excellent supervisor, who is proficient in areas of staff performance appraisal and professional development; and an experienced and effective leader who is familiar with and effective in applying best practices in the area of international student services.

The successful candidate should possess a minimum of ten years of increasing responsibility, with at least five being at the leadership level. A Master's degree in related field (Higher Education Administration, International Affairs, or Business) or in a traditional academic discipline is required
