The Office of Student Engagement is seeking applications for a Coordinator of Student Engagement position. A newly created department within the Division of Student Affairs, Student Engagement provides co-curricular experiences in the areas of student organization development and advisement, student organization finances, civic engagement & volunteer programs, and student sustainability.

Position Overview

The Coordinator of Student Engagement is a member of Student Engagement team and has primary responsibilities for advising, coaching, and mentoring student members of the Student Organization Resource Fee (SORF) Board, providing critical support to student organizations in articulating their mission and goals, and assisting the facilitation of student organization officer and member development.

Roles & Responsibilities

SORF Program Coordination & Board Advisement (50%)
Coordinate the SORF Program and serve as the Advisor to the Student Organization Resource Fee (SORF) Board, Officers and members (a group elected by the student body).

  • Facilitate training and coaching, and provide guidance on organizational development, fiscal management, funding request reviews, and recruitment of future board members.

  • Approve and sign expenditures, compile financial and annual reports, attend funding meetings, and advise student organizations of SORF procedures, policies, and resources.

  • This position will work with office staff to incorporate SORF policies and processes within student organization orientations and trainings.

  • Oversees the maintenance of records on all Student Organizations that apply for SORF funding.

  • Works closely with Student Organization Finance Center (SOFC) staff to ensure all fund transfers and reconciliations for allocations are in accordance with the awarded SORF funds.


Student Organization Development & Administration (25%)

Assists with the advisement, administration, and development of more than 1,000 student organizations via annual registration, event planning, and regular meetings with student leaders, organization advisors, and key stakeholders.

  • Coordinate integrated and intentional learning experiences and opportunities for student organization officers and members intended to prepare them to be proactive ambassadors of the Illinois Experience.

  • Design, facilitate, and evaluate trainings for student organization officers, members, and advisors on areas including, but not limited to, career readiness, Design Thinking, diversity and inclusion, harm reduction, business practices, hazing prevention, and community engagement.

  • Work with student organizations through mentoring relationships with student officers, assisting student leaders to develop and monitor budgets, as well as planning and executing events and programs.

  • Assist with the implementation and coordination of University-wide engagement initiatives, i.e, Quad Day, Involvement Fair.


Student Specialist Coordination & Supervision (5%)

Provide supervision to the SORF student employee staff and assigned Student Engagement Student Specialist.

  • Coordinate the hiring and selection process for new student staff members.

  • Coordinate training and development initiatives.

  • Manage weekly tasks of student employees while tracking performance for development of learning and growth opportunities.

  • Coordinate schedules and approve bi-weekly timesheets.


Department Administration (20%)

  • Serve as a member on one of the Student Engagement Teams: Marketing & Branding or Programs & Outreach.

  • Assist with the advisement of Illinois Student Government.

  • Serve as an advisor to a student council or committee as needed.

  • Collaborate with campus partners to address co-curricular engagement through the assessment of gaps in needs and services.

  • Perform other duties as assigned (including service on campus committees) to advance the unit, department, and division.


Education Required

  • Master's degree


Experience Required

  • Minimum 1 year (graduate or fulltime) of experience in student activities/development, leadership.


Experience Preferred

  • Ability to interpret policy, to exercise keen judgment, and to adapt to changing conditions successfully.

  • Knowledge of student organization/engagement management software.

  • Experience supervising staff.

  • Ability to engage in program evaluation and outcomes assessment.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of current needs, trends and issues in the area of Higher education, Student Affairs and /or student engagement.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of student development and group dynamics principles.

  • Ability to work with diverse group of people and understanding of issues of diversity and inclusion.

  • Demonstrated advising or student success coaching.

  • Ability to provide programmatic oversight and leadership.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and assess new and existing programs and services.

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to prepare and deliver presentations and external publications.

  • Ability to incorporate student learning and development philosophy into program delivery.

  • Strong organizational and problem analysis skills.


Salary & Compensation: The salary range is commensurate with experience and includes an excellent benefits package.

Appointment Type - Regular twelve-month, 100% academic professional appointment.

Start Date - As soon as possible after closing.
