Description
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) Library seeks a dynamic candidate for a 12-month, tenure eligible position of Cataloging and Metadata Librarian. This is a great opportunity for an early career professional interested in working in a collaborative environment that values a standards-based approach to description.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Department Head of Collections Services and working closely with the Director of Acquisitions and Content Management, the Cataloging and Metadata Librarian provides leadership and operational oversight of cataloging, metadata, and authority control initiatives related to the UTC Library's electronic, digital, print, and equipment collections.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform original and complex copy cataloging and authority control of materials in all formats;
- Develop and maintain workflows, local policies, and documentation for cataloging and metadata initiatives including implementation of new technologies and services;
- Assess metadata through quality assurance and quality control and direct remediation projects;
- Administer and manage configurations and workflows related to resource management within the Library Systems Platform (LSP), Alma;
- Ensure bibliographic and administrative metadata within Library systems is accurate in order to meet reporting and analysis requirements and needs;
- Perform and advise on data migration, harvesting, and syncing projects;
- Ensure metadata is accurately displayed to the end user in discovery platforms so that resources are discoverable, accessible, and shareable;
- Manage routine and project-based cataloging and metadata tasks assigned to student assistants;
- Build and sustain positive working relationships with library and campus colleagues, vendors, and external partners from diverse backgrounds;
- Actively participate in Acquisitions and Content Management meetings, planning, collaborative goal setting, and assessment;
- Conduct research, produce scholarship, and serve the library, university, and profession as consistent with a tenure-track appointment;
- Maintain awareness and knowledge of current and emerging trends related to cataloging, metadata, authority control, and linked open data and engage in continuing professional development.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications
- Master's degree in library or information science from an ALA-Accredited institution or an ALA-recognized/affiliated international institution completed by the date of appointment;
- Knowledge of descriptive standards and encoding schema including, but not limited to RDA, MARC21, LCSH, and LCC;
- Ability to use and capacity to learn new software and information technologies to complete work, solve problems, and improve a process;
- Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, and creativity to manage routine work and projects independently and as part of a team within a complex organization and dynamic work environment;
- Strong attention to detail and the capacity to think analytically, solve complex problems and address ambiguity; and
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualifications are not required, and the Library is committed to helping our future colleague develop the following preferred skills:
- Working experience in a library or library consortia environment;
- Experience using a library services platform, such as Alma, FOLIO, or WMS to complete cataloging or metadata workflows;
- Knowledge of or experience with batch loading, bulk editing, or transformation of records or data using tools like MARCEdit or OpenRefine;
- Experience mentoring or supervising employees (staff and or student assistants) in a library setting.
