Working Title Assistant Director - Benefits

Job Summary

Eastern Washington University is seeking a skilled and team oriented individual to serve as our *Assistant Director of Benefits*. This position reports to the Director of Benefits and is a division of the Office of Human Resources. The primary purpose of this position is to assist the Director of Benefits in administering the university's insurance and retirement programs. The Assistant Director will be responsible for assisting in the development, recommendation, and implementation of policies and procedures relating to all insurance and retirement plans in compliance with appropriate regulations, laws, and University policies; establishing and initiating procedures and processes involving EWU retirement and insurance programs; ensuring federal compliance of IRS codes for participation in the voluntary investment plan in relation to the university's retirement plans.

This position addresses sensitive issues, such as individual/or group meetings with employees being laid off, retirement planning, medical disability, and providing one-on-one benefit orientations to new employees and key candidates and other issues that arise.

Physical Demands

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
    Minimum four years of current professional human resource experience with minimum of *two years demonstrated experience administering a benefits package*.
    Successful work experience regarding the knowledge and understanding of practices, policies, laws and regulations governing benefits.
    Demonstrated computer skills to include MS Office and Outlook calendaring.
    Possess excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
    Candidate must demonstrate interest, ability and/or experience promoting cultural competency, universal accessibility and/or diversity.y.




Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree
    Higher education experience
    Experience with Ellucian Banner HR/Payroll module or similar ERP systems
    Experience administering benefit/retirement programs for large employer




Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work independently and part of a team.
    Excellent organizational and time management skills
    Ability to think creatively and work collaboratively to address problems
    Ability to manage several complex projects simultaneously while working under pressure to meet deadlines.
