Eastern Washington University seeks an innovative, influential and collaborative leader for a new position as Associate Vice Provost for Equity & Inclusion, and which will serve as the Chief Diversity Officer for Academic Affairs.


Position reports directly to the Provost and is part of the executive leadership team in Academic Affairs. The position will be responsible for diversity, inclusion and related strategic initiatives for the division of Academic Affairs. The position provides leadership for enhancing and sustaining diversity, promotes a campus-wide culture of diversity and inclusiveness in curriculum and classroom culture, and develops strategic initiatives that contribute to the success of all students, faculty, and staff. The position will also serve an advisory role to the university's Executive Leadership Team.

Conditions of Employment

Travel locally, regionally and within the state of Washington should be expected, as well as occasional out-of-state travel. Candidate must have access to a personal vehicle, valid driver's license, and proof of insurance.


This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value; as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check prior to beginning employment.


All employees are expected to demonstrate interest, ability and/or experience promoting cultural competency, universal accessibility and/or diversity.







Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced graduate or professional degree from an accredited college or university



  • Qualifications for appointment to the tenured faculty in a discipline affiliated with the university



  • Five or more years of administrative experience which includes the advancement of diversity, inclusion and/or equity initiatives and management of professional staff and other resources



  • Demonstrated record of success leading institutional initiatives, building programs, and promoting diversity and inclusion




Preferred Qualifications:

  • Extensive experience as a faculty member in higher education



  • Diversity and inclusion experience at an institution with a comprehensive undergraduate and graduate campus



  • Experience developing and facilitating professional development on topics such as culturally responsive pedagogy, diversity and hiring, and implicit bias



  • Knowledge and understanding of the range of evidence for the educational benefits that accrue to students, staff and faculty through diversity, inclusion, and equity in higher education





Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities



  • Exceptional leadership and interpersonal skills

  • Proven record as an advocate for diversity and inclusion in higher education

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for engaging with a wide variety of individuals and groups

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and maintain positive interpersonal relationships within a culturally diverse environment

  • Knowledge and understanding of the range of evidence for the educational benefits that accrue to students, staff and faculty through diversity, inclusion, and equity in higher education

  • Basic knowledge of how various forms of institutional data can be used to benchmark and promote accountability for the diversity mission of higher education institutions

  • Understanding of how curriculum development efforts can advance the diversity mission of higher education institutions

  • Demonstrated ability to lead programs focused on student access and success, including pipeline programs into higher education

  • Experience in developing, implementing, and evaluating strategic plans with positive results

  • Proven track record of increasing success in fostering a positive environment for diversity and inclusion

  • Demonstrated ability to garner external resources through grants and gifts
