Job Description
The Assistant Director, Pre-Award aides in supporting the research mission of Boston College and the goals of OSP. This position reports to the Associate Director of Pre-& Post-Award Administration but works closely as a team with the post-award staff in
supporting the research goals of the College.
The Assistant Director, Pre-Award, is an integral partner in a sponsored programs administration team. Key functions of the position are as follows:
The Assistant Director, Pre-Award must be able to communicate clearly, effectively and in a professional manner. This position must have the capacity to educate and train individuals with varying levels of experience in sponsored program administration. The individual must be capable of managing multiple tasks and working in a demanding, deadline-driven environment.
Overall, the Assistant Director, Pre-Award must exhibit (1) a thorough knowledge and high level of functional and technical competency of electronic research administration tools such as Grants.gov, Research.gov, PIVOT; ERA Commons, ASSIST; Fed Connect; (2) professional competence in interpreting Federal regulations , 2CFR200 and FAR; (3) the ability to negotiate subcontracts and awards while balancing the needs of the research, the university and the external sponsor; (4) confidence and competency in training departmental administrators; (5) functional and technical competency in university administrative and financial management tools including all the various modules of PeopleSoft and (6) a host of other functional and technical competencies that frame the professional duties of a research administrator.
A major challenge of this position is to develop innovative solutions and approaches to problems, desired outcomes and regulatory restrictions and ensuring compliance. Instances when problems and challenges require creative solutions may involve: (1) negotiating grant and contract terms and conditions to the mutual satisfaction of all parties; (2) works closely with post-award operations integrating new audit guidance into OSP best practices; (3) working with faculty to navigate sponsor and university regulatory constraints; (4) facilitating multiple proposals for a time-sensitive grant submission; (5) facilitating limited proposal submissions and (6) guiding faculty/departmental administrators in the preparation of electronic submission materials are just six examples of the numerous issues and challenges a Pre-award team member might encounter on a daily basis.
Hiring Ranges:
Level I: Grant Proposal & Contracts Administrator: $60,800-$76,000
Level II: Assistant Director, Pre-Award Administration: $67,100-$83,850
Level III: Senior Assistant Director, Pre-Award Administration: $75,850-$94,800
Requirements
Bachelor's degree required. Experience working with faculty/departmental administrators in an academic setting. Knowledge of Federal regulations for managing higher education research administration. Knowledge of Boston College internal administrative/financial systems preferred. Ability to manage a complex workload with multiple competing demands and intense deadline pressure. Willingness and interest in participating in professional research administration organizations. Continuing professional education as provided by professional organizations (NCURA, SRA, etc.).
