The Aquatics and Safety Coordinator manages and supervises the campus recreation aquatics program. The coordinator supervises programs and special events offered by UTC Aquatics. The Aquatics and Safety Coordinator works with internal and external constituents for pool rentals. The coordinator serves as part of the safety and risk management team. Additional responsibilities include budget management, the maintenance and operations of the pump room and natatorium.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Aquatics Staff Development
Hires, trains, supervises, evaluates and manages over 25 aquatics and safety student and non-student part-time employees, including Aquatics Student Leads, Head Lifeguards, Senior Lifeguards, Lifeguards, Swim Instructors, and Safety Instructors; plans in-service and coaching sessions with a strong emphasis on skill-development, transferable work skills, staff empowerment, and diversity; develops students in leadership positions through regular meetings and coaching sessions; assesses student staff learning outcomes; and engages in departmental training efforts for student staff.
Aquatics Programs and Events
Oversees all programs, events, and rentals within the Aquatics program area; designs, markets, executes and assesses programs and annual events, including 200 + Pool Parties, 100+ Aquatic Facility Rentals, private swimming lessons, youth swimming lessons, adult swim clinics, lifeguard and lifeguard review courses, CPR courses, and large events; enters all programs into the Fusion software system for sales and reservations; collaborates with constituents in Campus Recreation, UTC departments, and the local community; and monitors the industry programming trends and implements new and inclusive activities.
Aquatics Operations
Works with the Assistant Director of Programs and Engagement and maintenance technicians to oversee the daily, weekly, monthly, and annual maintenance of the natatorium and pump room, including pool/spa water chemistry, preventative maintenance, and large repairs/remodel projects; ensures compliance and maintains records of pool/spa chemicals and chemistry, pool permits, and local/state/federal regulations; maintains a strong working relationship with the Hamilton County Health Department; maintains, repairs, and replaces equipment in the natatorium and pump room, including the pool/spa lift, pool furniture, swimming and safety equipment; oversees a $150K+ budget, including labor, program expenses, maintenance and purchasing; and forecasts and monitors all wages and staffing.
Risk and Safety Management
Works closely with Campus Recreation Leadership to ensure that Campus Recreation's Emergency Action Plans and emergency response plans are effective, up-to-date, and integrated throughout the department; works in partnership with UTC's Safety and Risk Management Department; audits and maintains all student and professional staff member CPR, First Aid, AED and Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP) certifications; schedules and staffs regular CPR/AED/FA for the Workplace and BBP courses; oversees the maintenance of all Campus Recreation first aid and BBP kits, bio-hazard disposal, AEDs, and medical response equipment; and monitors changes and ensure adherence to OHSA, UTC, local, state, federal, Health Department, and American Red Cross regulations and standards.
Additional Responsibilities
Works with all UTC Campus Recreation professional staff to advance the department's vision, mission, core values, and strategic plan; and works to support that overall mission of Campus Recreation, Enrollment Management and Student Affairs (EMSA), and UTC including active participation in Campus Recreation and campus campaigns, initiatives, and projects.
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
- Knowledge of pool water chemistry and preventative maintenance
- Knowledge of student development, campus recreation and aquatics trends
- Program and event planning, customer service, interpersonal, supervision, communication, and conflict resolution skills
- Strong development and organization skills with attention to detail

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree; and 2+ years of experience supervising staff within an aquatics program; current American Red Cross certification in Lifeguarding (or equivalent); current certification as a Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) and Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or the ability to certify within 6 months.
Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in Recreation, Student Affairs, Sports Management or a related field; 2 years experience working in a collegiate aquatic environment; graduate assistantship in Campus Recreation; Administering Emergency Oxygen, Lifeguard Instructor Trainer (LGIT), Water Safety Instructor Trainer (WSIT), Certified Pool and Spa Operator Certification (CPO), and/or Certified Pool and Spa Operator Instructor (CPOI) certifications; experience with budgeting, assessment, and marketing; and extensive knowledge in pool water chemistry, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing.
