Purpose:

This is a live-in 11 month professional position. This position will oversee assigned residence hall(s), supervise 1 Head Resident Assistant (HRA) and an assigned number of Resident Assistants (RA), subsequently referred to as "RA staff." They will play a critical role in providing a challenging and supportive environment for residential students to live and learn. The Area Director will additionally serve as the primary support for residential operations functions of the Office of Residence Life.

Essential Functions:
Overall Departmental Responsibilities
1. Serve in the Administrator On-Call rotation, the second tier of the emergency on-call response system for the entire campus of 800 residential students. This includes receiving phone calls from a variety of sources on campus (RAs, Campus Police, and Counseling etc.) and determining the proper response based on training and independent judgement around each situation.
2. Perform an annual review of the departmental Standard Operating Procedures and the College Handbook and provide recommendations to the Dean of Campus Living based on their experiences and interpretation of the SOPs and policies throughout the year.
3. Create, manage, and assess RA training and development for the full staff of RAs. This includes but is not limited to creating pre and post training assessments and analyzing the data to identify training needs and create and implement educational workshops.
4. Plan and implement RA recruitment and selection. This includes but is not limited to: evaluating the RA vacancies and independently determining recruitment needs and creating application, interview, and evaluation materials that assess a student's candidacy.
5. Adjudicate cases as an incident review officer in the student conduct process, utilizing their judgment and discretion to determine students' level of responsibility and assign developmental and educational sanctions.
6. Serve on divisional and departmental committees as delegated by the Dean of Campus Living and/or Supervisor.

Residential Operations Responsibilities
1.Serve as a power-user for the Residence housing database.
2. Determine appropriate housing assignments based on accommodations from the Office of Accessibility Services.
3. Systemize and execute break and summer housing procedures, including but not limited to approving break housing exceptions based on independent judgment of student requests and coordination with other offices
4. Responsible for all summer housing procedures, including but not limited to selection of staff, assignment of summer housing rooms, and collaboration with Conferences and Events.
5. Determine and delegate responsibilities to Residence Life staff for Admissions events.
6. Serve as the key manager, including but not limited to collaborating with Facilities to ensure inventory of keys for all residence halls.
7. Represent the Office of Residence Life at the CSII and Orientation committees.

Staff Management and Supervision
1. Supervise 1 HRA and an assigned number of RAs. This includes but is not limited to: assessing ongoing performance and determining the need for an RA to be held accountable through the performance model and evaluating the RA staff twice per academic year through the formal Office of Campus Living evaluation process, which includes providing a recommendation on whether or not RAs should be rehired for the position.
2. Independently manage the RA staff, which includes but is not limited to: using knowledge of campus and staff issues to determine weekly staff meeting topics and development opportunities.
3. Lead the RA Feedback Survey data collection in the assigned residence halls using their own ideas for increased survey response and recruitment and appropriately assess the responses to identify necessary training initiatives for the RA staff.
4. Analyze the RA staff's program evaluations and use that information at their discretion to identify and implement new program ideas that can address trends and student concerns.
5. Provide support to the RA staff in areas including but not limited to: the initial approval in the RA staff's budget proposals, addressing conflict and concerns from residents, and recruiting efforts for RA Selection.
6. Create ongoing RA appreciation opportunities and manage the weekly recognition outreach, including department-wide RA Appreciation Day.

Residence Hall Management
1. Utilize working knowledge of student development theory to provide direct support to students, initiating the involvement of other offices, parents, and additional resources at this person's discretion.
2. Mediate student conflicts that this person determines based on their own judgment are above the ability or beyond the scope of the RA staff.
3. Identify student conduct and conflict trends and create initiatives to address student behavior using their own interpretation of incidents and information gathered by staff.
4. Determine and direct proactive outreach and programming for the needs of specialty housing community in their residential area in collaboration with faculty.
5. Direct the day to day operations of assigned residence hall(s), including but not limited to: implement move-in, move-out, and closing procedures, supervise inventory of open spaces in assigned residence hall(s), and execute room switches between students at the this person's discretion.
6. Develop and maintain a good working relationship with Campus Police, Facilities, and Dining Services.

Required Education and Experience:

1. Master's Degree in Student Personnel, Counseling or a related field or 1-3 years relevant graduate and/or professional experience in higher education is required.
2. Previous work experience with Residence Life/Housing required; previous work experience specifically with housing operations is preferred.
3. Ability to work effectively with a diverse population of students, Residence Life staff, and campus community members. Diversity includes race, gender, culture, nationality, sexual orientation, gender expression and ability.
4. Ability to organize work, exercise good judgment, complete tasks in a timely manner, collaborate, perform routine supportive tasks such as scheduling and record keeping.
5. Strong crisis management skills are necessary.
6. Ability to work on a collaborative team in a fast-paced and changing environment.
7. Ability to climb stairs and travel by foot required.
8. Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
9. Customer-service oriented.
10. Visa status must permit campus employment.
11. Successful candidates must meet CORI and SORI background check standards.
12. This is a live-in position.
